1963 Mercury Marauder S-55
Owner: Tom Yanulaytis

Along with most car enthusiasts, I also regularly attend local cruise nights as a means of satisfying my need to see vehicles of varying type.  I expect to see many of the same cars and trucks that have graced the streets that I visit often but I always anticipate seeing something new.

This past week, my wife, Agar, and I arrived at our local cruise later than usual and started to make the rounds.  On our way to the raffle table, I stopped dead in my tracks when I spotted this black 1963 Mercury Marauder S-55.  After reading the many posts on our Lovefords discussion line, I knew it was a rather rare and unique car.

My eyes took in the extensive bodylines, highlighted by bright molding, the dual spotlight rearview mirrors and dual rear-deck antennas.  But I rapidly went to the red-vinyl bucket seat interior, as this is what I like most in a ‘60’s car.

There were no disappointments as I gazed on a nearly flawless cockpit and Agar also commented positively on its condition and appeal.  While continuing my appreciation for the full compliment of gauges, vinyl and chrome, Agar came to me and said the car was for sale.  It’s amazing when one views an object of beauty how they tend to have tunnel vision and block out the surroundings.

For the next hour or so I seemed to be glued to the car, as I wanted to hear the owner tell inquiring minds about it.  I received a head-full of knowledge from both the seller and spectators in a short time and Agar and I discussed our possible purchase.

By the end of the evening’s event, I was taking the car for a test drive to see how the standard equipped 390 4-V performed.  It had flawless pickup and the Merc-O-Matic was smooth as silk.  I was sold and within a short time, the S-55 was as well.

I must publicly thank my wife for actually encouraging me to buy the car.  The postponement of her promised convertible was a great sacrifice on her part and I know that it will be upgraded when it is time to present it to her.  Until then, I am a slave in my own home.  But wait, nothing has changed has it?  Time will tell.
